Do you ever sit down to make a card, only to feel like you need a dozen ink colors, a mountain of supplies, and an entire free afternoon to create something special?
Friend, you really don’t.
This week’s three Raven’s Tale cards prove that a single ink pad, a few coordinating papers, and one fabulous stamped image can make a big impact. These Halloween cards are simple enough for a newer stamper, but the layers, texture, and finishing touches give them plenty of personality for a more experienced cardmaker, too.
The Raven’s Tale stamp set also makes me think of my mom. She loved fall and decorated our home with primitive-style crows and ravens. Certain stamps do more than create a pretty card—they bring back memories of people and seasons we love. That makes creating with this raven feel especially meaningful to me.
Let One Strong Image Do the Work
The beautifully detailed raven is the star of all three cards. Because the image has so much character, it doesn’t need complicated coloring or a collection of ink pads. Every card was stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink.
If you feel overwhelmed trying to choose colors, start with a bold black-and-white design. It is classic, forgiving, and easy to coordinate. You can always introduce one additional color through patterned paper, as I did with Pumpkin Pie on the Nevermore card.
A large detailed stamp can sometimes require a second impression. A stamp-positioning tool lets you stamp the image again in exactly the same place if part of it doesn’t transfer completely. That little bit of reassurance can make stamping a large image feel much less intimidating.
Three Simple Raven’s Tale Card Ideas
The first card features a timeless black, white, and gray color combination. I tilted the stamped raven layer just slightly instead of placing it perfectly straight. That small change gives the card a more relaxed, playful feeling. A tiny black twine bow, a banner sentiment, and puffy stars complete the design.
The second card adds Pumpkin Pie striped paper and a narrow strip of black-and-white polka dots. The raven is stamped on a large circle cut with the Spotlight on Nature Dies, while the fussy-cut “Nevermore” sentiment adds a wonderfully dramatic Edgar Allan Poe touch.
The third card may be my favorite. The black cardstock was embossed with the Textured Tree Ring 3D Embossing Folder, creating a deep, dramatic background. A clean white raven panel placed across the center keeps the design from feeling too dark, while the separated “Happy Halloween” sentiment adds dimension without making the layout complicated.
Each card uses the same basic ingredients, but they don’t look identical. This is a great way to stretch your supplies without having to reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to create.
An Easy Trick for Fussy-Cutting Sentiments
If fussy cutting makes you nervous because you aren’t sure where to cut, try this trick.
Before stamping, place the unmounted sentiment stamp on your cardstock and lightly trace around its outside edge with a pencil. Mount and stamp the sentiment inside that outline. Then use your Paper Snips to cut just inside the pencil line.
You’ll have a simple cutting guide, and the pencil marks will be left behind on the scraps. No perfect hand-lettering skills or guesswork required!
Add Interest Without Adding More Work
Small details can make a simple handmade card feel finished. On these cards, I used:
- Black Baker’s Twine for texture and softness
- Puffy stars for a little dimension
- Patterned paper for quick color and contrast
- Dimensionals to lift the sentiments
- A 3D embossing folder for a dramatic tone-on-tone background
You don’t need to use every embellishment you own. Choose two or three small details and repeat them across several cards. Your projects will feel coordinated, and you’ll spend less time making decisions.
One additional tip: heavily embossed cardstock has weakened paper fibers. When applying adhesive, move your adhesive runner slowly and use a little extra adhesive. Moving too quickly can catch and tear the cardstock.
Create These Cards With My Free Class With Purchase
This is my August Free Card Class with Purchase! Place an order of at least $40 before shipping and tax through my online store, and I’ll send you the prepared consumable pieces needed to recreate all three cards.
You’ll simply need your own ink, adhesives, and Raven’s Tale stamp set—or substitute another stamp you already love. Your card does not need to look exactly like mine to be beautiful.
If you’re on my email list, you’ll also receive the printable tutorial with the supply list, measurements, and step-by-step instructions. You can find the tutorial on my blog as well.
